Getting to Galway

Information provided by Ireland West Tourism.

As one of the major population centres in the West of Ireland, Galway City has excellent travel connections, both domestic and international, and is well connected to all areas of the county.

By Air

Galway Airport is located in Carnmore, approximately 6km from Galway City near Oranmore.

The short drive to the city centre is well signposted. On exiting the airport, turn left and at the first roundabout, take the 3rd exit road. From there follow the clear signposts through a series of roundabouts to the city centre. Direct daily flights operate to and from Dublin and London (Luton).

Knock International Airport in Charlestown, Co. Mayo is a little over an hour from Galway City.

From Knock Airport take the N17 south past Knock Town, Claremorris and Tuam to Galway City. Flights run regularly to Knock from Dublin, London (Stansted), Manchester and Birmingham.

Shannon International Airport in Co. Clare is an hour and a half south of Galway City.

If you are driving, take the N18 north from Shannon to Galway City through Ennis, Gort, Kilcolgan and Oranmore. Shannon Airport offers a wide range of direct flights from Dublin, the UK, continental Europe and North America.

By Car

Bring your own car or hire from any number of car hire firms at airports or most towns.

Driving in Ireland is on the left hand side of the road and the N6 is the major road from Dublin. The drive from Dublin to Galway is 140 miles and will take approximately 3 hours. The N6 goes through Maynooth, Enfield, Kinnegad (take the first exit road off the roundabout just before Kinnegad town), Tyrrellspass, Moate, Athlone, Ballinasloe, Loughrea and Oranmore.

Some towns are bypassed, with others the N6 goes through the main street offering a fascinating glimpse of daily life.
